Book Review: A Seven Day Journey With Thomas Merton by Esther De Waal

Helpful for meditation retreat into the heart with God

Today, again I asked myself during centering prayer, that my heart is open to God. This is the God of the Christocentric Trinity whom I speak. The book, "A Seven Day Journey with Thomas Merton" by Esther de Waal is an excellent exercise for the retirement home that helps them come to open the heart to God. The book does so in words, and he has photographs of Thomas Merton.

Regardless, through words or watching the pictures, we can find a way to see the world in daily life and find God. Set out as a journey of seven days, take the book gently and very carefully during the day, leaving aside the time to go into retirement. In the notes on Thomas Merton, the author states: "The message of love, the primacy of love is the most basic definition of monastic life as Merton discovered … "

Thomas Merton was a man who lived a life of love, to learn so much about her and Esther de Waal, a Benedictine is a good person to help us on the path of love that knew Thomas Merton.

It raises questions in the days of retirement. On the first day, she asked: "Who am I before God at this point in my life? "It continues in an intimate manner, it teaches us to become intimate with God:" … I am impressed to think that the person I am that unique person, so lovingly created by God in the fullness and richness of my own individuality, one person made for her daughter, his son. "Is it too close to some readers (which I think they are starting points for considerations). Then, as being too close, I not think the book is personal. If the reader has a point of departure for relationship with God, and is not afraid to explore sensitive areas and open relationships he or she will find these statements more meaningful as time passes. This is a book to be used more than once, is what becomes apparent.

Another thing that helps this book is the way of contemplation. As she quotes Thomas Merton, using his poetry throughout the book, we have a guide to help us exercise our spiritual quest. On "Day Three – The Solitary Within: The True Self" Merton is quoted: "What can we gain by sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves? "In Psalm 139, she quotes a result for this pension year. "It was you who created my being / knit me together in my mother's womb / I thank you for the wonder of my being, / The wonders your whole creation. "

Day Four – Encounter With Christ "is the fourth day and the day of the retreat center. Remember, this book is a retirement of seven days to read a chapter at a time, day by day. The great Don Merton offers readers is sharing its experience in contemplation, his spiritual journey, and especially his coming to know God. The book is kept in the books section for "Spirituality / Prayer" and those interested will visit that they are with ".. the Christ of God, in the spirit of his love life in the People of God …" It is a book that is open for the reader, and open to people who are seekers of God who desire to pray. It is a prayer book, I should say.

How religious is this book? My question to you as a reader will know that this is a book that is approachable. It "answers" to the statement of John Cassian in his "Conferences" when I'm reading about her relationship with God as one who seeks May find in his life. Even the advances that are spiritually inclined will find this book an approachable This measure of Cassian: "… We know where we should engage the attention of our mind and what purpose we should always remind us of our soul light. This may be a question leading to many of us, and this book is useful to achieve the intent of the statement in life. It is a book that has life in movement possibilities, one step at a time.

I'd be missing an important aspect of this book if I did not mention photographs by Thomas Merton. We can say that we have seen his photographs, if you read this book. Something good for a person educated in the 21st century. If you are a reader log "Weavings" you may come at the photograph of Thomas Merton more prepared to see the contemplative everyday things. The Journal is a quarterly series articles from publications of the upper house on these subjects. "A trip to seven days with Thomas Merton" is a comprehensive work to help anyone consult. Thomas Merton sees things in his world, and we must look at the pictures and then make the connection with the ordinary things of those world and life. Which for me is a good entry point understanding of these photographs in a book that is a retreat.

A comment on Thomas Merton by a woman who is well prepared and able to take this type of comment, mostly this book is his interpretation of Merton writings together as a retreat for people at home or use in a retreat setting away from home. With a foreword by Henri Nouwen, and photographs by Thomas Merton (including a more intriguing to him the next crosses – big, big) on the cover, the title by Esther de Waal is published by Servant Publications in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I listened to a broadcast on Web a few years ago, Trinity Church in New York, if my memory is correct, when a woman editor with Publisher's Weekly said that one things that compete with the ecclesial life is good reading – books in other words. This is one of those books that can compete with a time Retirement away from home, and for me it was the value thereof. I have the book at home, use it for study and prayer on During seven days and come closer to God in my relationship with Him through the book. This book is a good thing in the world.
