Improving Reading Comprehension Through self-questioning
Everyone knows that to get the right answers you need ask the right questions. Ask questions about the text you are reading significantly improves reading comprehension. "Talking to the text improves concentration and helps the reader to interact with the author. Reading becomes a two-way active process, not a one-way passive activity.
But what matters is producing the best understanding of the text? Try these eight questions to stimulate your reading comprehension and retention.
1. What's the big picture here? Constantly ask how each section of reading refers to the main idea (s) of this chapter.
2. What is the author say? Stay one step ahead of the author, anticipating what will be said next. Prediction significantly strengthens reading comprehension. Check the results of your forecast you read.
3. Think about the "issues" expert your subject you read. For example: History is important to compare and contrast, questions of causation and the related sequence. Science may not apply to the classification, chemical and physical properties and literature could focus on the theme, type, character and plot.
4. Questions What this information raise for me? Your Questions May and should be different from the expert the issue because they are related to your own knowledge and interests. Remember that some very good questions have more than one answer!
5. What information is important here? As you read, decide what information is important enough to include in your notes.
6. How can I paraphrase and summarize this information? Translate important words of the author in your own file. Use as few words as possible without changing the meaning. To do this, at the end of each sub-title of the article in a manual or at the end of chapter in a novel.
7. How does this fit with the information that I already know? Think "big picture" and how pieces of information fit together to improve reading comprehension.
8. Ask WHO what, where, when and why questions as you read. Introductory note and description of characters, major plot changes, the establishment descriptions and changes, and reasons to explain important ideas.
